           SeeingthatMrQuilpinvestedhimselfinhisevery-daygarments,hehastenedtodothelike,puttingonhisshoesbeforehisstockings,andthrustinghislegsintohiscoatsleeves,andmakingsuchothersmallmistakesinhistoiletasarenotuncommontothosewhodressinahurry,andlabourundertheagitationofhavingbeensuddenlyroused.

           Whiletheattorneywasthusengaged,thedwarfwasgropingunderthetable,mutteringdesperateimprecationsonhimself,andmankindingeneral,andallinanimateobjectstoboot,whichsuggestedtoMrBrassthequestion,‘what’sthematter?’

           ‘Thekey,’saidthedwarf,lookingviciouslyabouthim,‘thedoor-keythat’sthematter.D’yeknowanythingofit?’

           ‘HowshouldIknowanythingofit,sir?’returnedMrBrass.

           Notcaringtorepresenttothedwarfinhispresenthumour,thatthelossofakeybyanotherpersoncouldscarcelybesaidtoaffecthis(Brass’s)legalknowledgeinanymaterialdegree,MrBrasshumblysuggestedthatitmusthavebeenforgottenovernight,andwas,doubtless,atthatmomentinitsnativekey-hole.NotwithstandingthatMrQuilphadastrongconvictiontothecontrary,foundedonhisrecollectionofhavingcarefullytakenitout,hewasfaintoadmitthatthiswaspossible,andthereforewentgrumblingtothedoorwhere,sureenough,hefoundit.
