HewastakentothePoliceCourtnextday,andwouldhavebeenimmediatelycommittedfortrial,butthatitwasnecessarytosenddownforanoldofficeroftheprison-shipfromwhichhehadonceescaped,tospeaktohisidentity.Nobodydoubtedit;butCompeyson,whohadmeanttodeposetoit,wastumblingonthetides,dead,andithappenedthattherewasnotatthattimeanyprisonofficerinLondonwhocouldgivetherequiredevidence.IhadgonedirecttoMr.Jaggersathisprivatehouse,onmyarrivalovernight,toretainhisassistance,andMr.Jaggersontheprisoner’sbehalfwouldadmitnothing.Itwasthesoleresource;forhetoldmethatthecasemustbeoverinfiveminuteswhenthewitnesswasthere,andthatnopoweronearthcouldpreventitsgoingagainstus.
