           IfullyexpectedtofindaConstableinthekitchen,waitingtotakemeup.ButnotonlywastherenoConstablethere,butnodiscoveryhadyetbeenmadeoftherobbery.Mrs.Joewasprodigiouslybusyingettingthehousereadyforthefestivitiesoftheday,andJoehadbeenputuponthekitchendoorsteptokeephimoutofthedust-pananarticleintowhichhisdestinyalwaysledhim,soonerorlater,whenmysisterwasvigorouslyreapingthefloorsofherestablishment.

           "Andwherethedeuceha’youbeen?"wasMrs.Joe’sChristmassalutation,whenIandmyconscienceshowedourselves.

           IsaidIhadbeendowntoheartheCarols."Ah!well!"observedMrs.Joe."Youmightha’doneworse."NotadoubtofthatIthought.

           Joe,whohadventuredintothekitchenaftermeasthedustpanhadretiredbeforeus,drewthebackofhishandacrosshisnosewithaconciliatoryair,whenMrs.Joedartedalookathim,and,whenhereyeswerewithdrawn,secretlycrossedhistwoforefingers,andexhibitedthemtome,asourtokenthatMrs.Joewasinacrosstemper.Thiswassomuchhernormalstate,thatJoeandIwouldoften,forweekstogether,be,astoourfingers,likemonumentalCrusadersastotheirlegs.
