           Myhandshadbeendressedtwiceorthriceinthenight,andagaininthemorning.Myleftarmwasagooddealburnedtotheelbow,and,lessseverely,ashighastheshoulder;itwasverypainful,buttheflameshadsetinthatdirection,andIfeltthankfulitwasnoworse.MyrighthandwasnotsobadlyburntbutthatIcouldmovethefingers.Itwasbandaged,ofcourse,butmuchlessinconvenientlythanmylefthandandarm;thoseIcarriedinasling;andIcouldonlywearmycoatlikeacloak,looseovermyshouldersandfastenedattheneck.Myhairhadbeencaughtbythefire,butnotmyheadorface.

           WhenHerberthadbeendowntoHammersmithandseenhisfather,hecamebacktomeatourchambers,anddevotedthedaytoattendingonme.Hewasthekindestofnurses,andatstatedtimestookoffthebandages,andsteepedtheminthecoolingliquidthatwaskeptready,andputthemonagain,withapatienttendernessthatIwasdeeplygratefulfor.
