           Soonafterwards,Biddy,Joe,andI,hadacolddinnertogether;butwedinedinthebestparlor,notintheoldkitchen,andJoewassoexceedinglyparticularwhathedidwithhisknifeandforkandthesaltcellarandwhatnot,thattherewasgreatrestraintuponus.Butafterdinner,whenImadehimtakehispipe,andwhenIhadloiteredwithhimabouttheforge,andwhenwesatdowntogetheronthegreatblockofstoneoutsideit,wegotonbetter.InoticedthatafterthefuneralJoechangedhisclothessofar,astomakeacompromisebetweenhisSundaydressandworkingdress;inwhichthedearfellowlookednatural,andliketheManhewas.

           HewasverymuchpleasedbymyaskingifImightsleepinmyownlittleroom,andIwaspleasedtoo;forIfeltthatIhaddoneratheragreatthinginmakingtherequest.Whentheshadowsofeveningwereclosingin,ItookanopportunityofgettingintothegardenwithBiddyforalittletalk.
