ThismentalexerciselasteduntilBiddymadearushatthemanddistributedthreedefacedBibles(shapedasiftheyhadbeenunskilfullycutoffthechumpendofsomething),moreillegiblyprintedatthebestthananycuriositiesofliteratureIhavesincemetwith,speckledalloverwithironmould,andhavingvariousspecimensoftheinsectworldsmashedbetweentheirleaves.ThispartoftheCoursewasusuallylightenedbyseveralsinglecombatsbetweenBiddyandrefractorystudents.Whenthefightswereover,Biddygaveoutthenumberofapage,andthenweallreadaloudwhatwecould—orwhatwecouldn’t—inafrightfulchorus;Biddyleadingwithahigh,shrill,monotonousvoice,andnoneofushavingtheleastnotionof,orreverencefor,whatwewerereadingabout.Whenthishorribledinhadlastedacertaintime,itmechanicallyawokeMr.Wopsle’sgreat-aunt,whostaggeredataboyfortuitously,andpulledhisears.ThiswasunderstoodtoterminatetheCoursefortheevening,andweemergedintotheairwithshrieksofintellectualvictory.Itisfairtoremarkthattherewasnoprohibitionagainstanypupil’sentertaininghimselfwithaslateorevenwiththeink(whentherewasany),butthatitwasnoteasytopursuethatbranchofstudyinthewinterseason,onaccountofthelittlegeneralshopinwhichtheclasseswereholden—andwhichwasalsoMr.Wopsle’sgreat-aunt’ssitting-roomandbedchamber—beingbutfaintlyilluminatedthroughtheagencyofonelow-spiriteddip-candleandnosnuffers.
