           Stillmoremustbedone.Hemustbemadetospeak,inorderthathemightbespokento—forMiladyverywellknewthathergreatestseductionwasinhervoice,whichsoskillfullyranoverthewholegamutoftonesfromhumanspeechtolanguagecelestial.

           YetinspiteofallthisseductionMiladymightfail—forFeltonwasforewarned,andthatagainsttheleastchance.Fromthatmomentshewatchedallhisactions,allhiswords,fromthesimplestglanceofhiseyestohisgestures—eventoabreaththatcouldbeinterpretedasasigh.Inshort,shestudiedeverything,asaskillfulcomediandoestowhomanewparthasbeenassignedinalinetowhichheisnotaccustomed.

           FacetofacewithLorddeWinterherplanofconductwasmoreeasy.Shehadlaidthatdowntheprecedingevening.Toremainsilentanddignifiedinhispresence;fromtimetotimetoirritatehimbyaffecteddisdain,byacontemptuousword;toprovokehimtothreatsandviolencewhichwouldproduceacontrastwithherownresignation—suchwasherplan.Feltonwouldseeall;perhapshewouldsaynothing,buthewouldsee.
