           Thenextday,whenFeltonenteredMilady’sapartmenthefoundherstanding,mounteduponachair,holdinginherhandsacordmadebymeansoftorncambrichandkerchiefs,twistedintoakindofropeonewithanother,andtiedattheends.AtthenoiseFeltonmadeinentering,Miladyleapedlightlytotheground,andtriedtoconcealbehindhertheimprovisedcordsheheldinherhand.

           Theyoungmanwasmorepalethanusual,andhiseyes,reddenedbywantofsleep,denotedthathehadpassedafeverishnight.Nevertheless,hisbrowwasarmedwithaseveritymoreausterethanever.

           HeadvancedslowlytowardMilady,whohadseatedherself,andtakinganendofthemurderousropewhichbyneglect,orperhapsbydesign,sheallowedtobeseen,"Whatisthis,madame?"heaskedcoldly.

           "That?Nothing,"saidMilady,smilingwiththatpainfulexpressionwhichsheknewsowellhowtogivetohersmile."Ennuiisthemortalenemyofprisoners;Ihadennui,andIamusedmyselfwithtwistingthatrope."

           FeltonturnedhiseyestowardthepartofthewalloftheapartmentbeforewhichhehadfoundMiladystandinginthearmchairinwhichshewasnowseated,andoverherheadheperceivedagilt-headedscrew,fixedinthewallforthepurposeofhangingupclothesorweapons.

           Hestarted,andtheprisonersawthatstartforthoughhereyeswerecastdown,nothingescapedher.

           "Whatwereyoudoingonthatarmchair?"askedhe.

           "Ofwhatconsequence?"repliedMilady.

           "But,"repliedFelton,"Iwishtoknow."
