           MM.BassompierreandSchombergweremarshalsofFrance,andclaimedtheirrightofcommandingthearmyundertheordersoftheking;butthecardinal,whofearedthatBassompierre,aHuguenotatheart,mightpressbutfeeblytheEnglishandRochellais,hisbrothersinreligion,supportedtheDucd’Angouleme,whomtheking,athisinstigation,hadnamedlieutenantgeneral.TheresultwasthattopreventMM.BassompierreandSchombergfromdesertingthearmy,aseparatecommandhadtobegiventoeach.Bassompierretookuphisquartersonthenorthofthecity,betweenLeuandDompierre;theDucd’Angoulemeontheeast,fromDompierretoPerigny;andM.deSchombergonthesouth,fromPerignytoAngoutin.

           ThequartersofMonsieurwereatDompierre;thequartersofthekingweresometimesatEstree,sometimesatJarrie;thecardinal’squarterswereuponthedowns,atthebridgeofLaPierre,inasimplehousewithoutanyentrenchment.SothatMonsieurwatchedBassompierre;theking,theDucd’Angouleme;andthecardinal,M.deSchomberg.
