           Atthemomentwhenhewasabouttoretire,shewascheeredwitharayofhope,forshethoughthewasabouttospeak;buthislipsmovedwithoutanysoundleavinghismouth,andmakingapowerfulefforttocontrolhimself,hesentbacktohisheartthewordsthatwereabouttoescapefromhislips,andwentout.Towardmidday,LorddeWinterentered.

           Itwasatolerablyfinewinter’sday,andarayofthatpaleEnglishsunwhichlightsbutdoesnotwarmcamethroughthebarsofherprison.

           Miladywaslookingoutatthewindow,andpretendednottohearthedoorasitopened.

           "Ah,ah!"saidLorddeWinter,"afterhavingplayedcomedy,afterhavingplayedtragedy,wearenowplayingmelancholy?"

           Theprisonermadenoreply.

           "Yes,yes,"continuedLorddeWinter,"Iunderstand.Youwouldlikeverywelltobeatlibertyonthatbeach!Youwouldlikeverywelltobeinagoodshipdancinguponthewavesofthatemerald-greensea;youwouldlikeverywell,eitheronlandorontheocean,tolayformeoneofthosenicelittleambuscadesyouaresoskillfulinplanning.Patience,patience!Infourdays’timetheshorewillbebeneathyourfeet,theseawillbeopentoyoumoreopenthanwillperhapsbeagreeabletoyou,forinfourdaysEnglandwillberelievedofyou."
