           Grenouille,however,recognizedwiththefirstinhaledsniffthattheingredientsonhandwouldbequitesufficientforhispurposes.Hedidnotwanttocreateagreatscent;hedidnotwanttocreateaprestigiouscolognesuchashehadoncemadeforBaldini,onethatstoodoutamidaseaofmediocrityandtamedthemasses.Norwaseventhesimpleorangeblossomscentthathehadpromisedthemarquishistruegoal.Thecustomaryessencesofneroli,eucalyptus,andcypressweremeantonlyasacoverfortheactualscentthatheintendedtoproduce:thatwasthescentofhumanness.Hewantedtoacquirethehuman-beingodor-ifonlyintheformofaninferiortemporarysurrogate-thathedidnotpossesshimself.True,theodorofhumanbeingdidnotexist,anymorethanthehumancountenance.Everyhumanbeingsmelleddifferent,nooneknewthatbetterthanGrenouille,whorecognizedthousandsuponthousandsofindividualodorsandcouldsniffoutthedifferenceofeachhumanbeingfrombirthon.Andyet-therewasabasicperfumatorythemetotheodorofhumanity,arathersimpleone,bytheway:asweaty-oily,sour-cheesy,quiterichlyrepulsivebasicthemethatclungtoallhumansequallyandabovewhicheachindividual’saurahoveredonlyasasmallcloudofmorerefinedparticularity.Thataura,however,thehighlycomplex,unmistakablecodeofapersonalodor,wasnotperceptibleformostpeopleinanycase.Mostpeopledidnotknowthattheyevenhadsuchathing,andmoreoverdideverythingtheycouldtodisguiseitunderclothesorfashionableartificialodors.
