           Buthefearedthathestillsmelledtoomuchofviolets,andsohescreamedforhisservantsyetagainandorderedthatallthevioletperfumeberemovedfromthehouse,thewholemansionaired,hisclothesdisinfectedinthevital-airventilator,andthatGrenouilleatoncebeconveyedinhissedanchairtothebestperfumerinthecity.AndofcoursethiswaspreciselywhatGrenouillehadintendedhisseizuretoaccomplish.ThescienceofperfumerywasanoldtraditioninMontpellier,andalthoughinmorerecenttimesithadlostgroundtoitscompetitor,thetownofGrasse,therewerestillseveralgoodperfumersandgloversresidinginthecity.Themostprestigiousofthem,acertainRunel-wellawareofthetradeheenjoyedwiththehouseofthemarquisdeLaTaillade-Espinasseasitspurveyorofsoaps,oils,andscents—declaredhimselfpreparedtotaketheunusualstepofsurrenderinghisstudioforanhourtothestrangejourneymanperfumerfromPariswhohadbeenconveyedthitherinasedanchair.Thelatterrefusedallinstructions,didnotevenwanttoknowwherethingswere;heknewhiswayaround,hesaid,wouldmanagewellenough.Andhelockedhimselfinthelaboratoryandstayedthereagoodhour,whileRuneljoinedthemarquis’smajordomoforacoupleofglassesofwineinatavern,wherehewastolearnwhyhisvioletcolognewasnolongerascentworthsmelling.Runel’slaboratoryandshopfellfarshortofbeingsograndlyequippedasBaldini’sperfumeshopinParishadbeeninitsday.Anaverageperfumerwouldnothavemadeanygreatprogresswithitsfewfloraloils,colognes,andspices.
