           Unless,indeed,itchancedtobedoubtedbytheobjectofMrSparkler’saffections.MissFannywasnowinthedifficultsituationofbeinguniversallyknowninthatlight,andofnothavingdismissedMrSparkler,howevercapriciouslysheusedhim.Hence,shewassufficientlyidentifiedwiththegentlemantofeelcompromisedbyhisbeingmorethanusuallyridiculous;andhence,beingbynomeansdeficientinquickness,shesometimescametohisrescueagainstGowan,anddidhimverygoodservice.But,whiledoingthis,shewasashamedofhim,undeterminedwhethertogetridofhimormoredecidedlyencouragehim,distractedwithapprehensionsthatshewaseverydaybecomingmoreandmoreimmeshedinheruncertainties,andtorturedbymisgivingsthatMrsMerdletriumphedinherdistress.
