           OnemanslowlymovingontowardsChalonswastheonlyvisiblefigureinthelandscape.Cainmighthavelookedaslonelyandavoided.Withanoldsheepskinknapsackathisback,andarough,unbarkedstickcutoutofsomewoodinhishand;miry,footsore,hisshoesandgaiterstroddenout,hishairandbearduntrimmed;thecloakhecarriedoverhisshoulder,andtheclotheshewore,soddenwithwet;limpingalonginpainanddifficulty;helookedasifthecloudswerehurryingfromhim,asifthewailofthewindandtheshudderingofthegrassweredirectedagainsthim,asifthelowmysteriousplashingofthewatermurmuredathim,asifthefitfulautumnnightweredisturbedbyhim.

           Heglancedhere,andheglancedthere,sullenlybutshrinkingly;andsometimesstoppedandturnedabout,andlookedallroundhim.Thenhelimpedonagain,toilingandmuttering.
