Chapter 36. The Marshalsea becomes an Orphan

           

           AndnowthedayarrivedwhenMrDorritandhisfamilyweretoleavetheprisonforever,andthestonesofitsmuch-troddenpavementweretoknowthemnomore.

           Theintervalhadbeenshort,buthehadgreatlycomplainedofitslength,andhadbeenimperiouswithMrRuggtouchingthedelay.HehadbeenhighwithMrRugg,andhadthreatenedtoemploysomeoneelse.HehadrequestedMrRuggnottopresumeupontheplaceinwhichhefoundhim,buttodohisduty,sir,andtodoitwithpromptitude.HehadtoldMrRuggthatheknewwhatlawyersandagentswere,andthathewouldnotsubmittoimposition.Onthatgentleman’shumblyrepresentingthatheexertedhimselftotheutmost,MissFannywasveryshortwithhim;desiringtoknowwhatlesshecoulddo,whenhehadbeentoldadozentimesthatmoneywasnoobject,andexpressinghersuspicionthatheforgotwhomhetalkedto.

           TowardstheMarshal,whowasaMarshalofmanyyears’standing,andwithwhomhehadneverhadanypreviousdifference,MrDorritcomportedhimselfwithseverity.Thatofficer,onpersonallytenderinghiscongratulations,offeredthefreeuseoftworoomsinhishouseforMrDorrit’soccupationuntilhisdeparture.
