           Italwaysaffectedhisimaginationaswrathful,mysterious,andsad;andhisimaginationwassufficientlyimpressibletoseethewholeneighbourhoodundersometingeofitsdarkshadow.Ashewentalong,uponadrearynight,thedimstreetsbywhichhewent,seemedalldepositoriesofoppressivesecrets.Thedesertedcounting-houses,withtheirsecretsofbooksandpaperslockedupinchestsandsafes;thebanking-houses,withtheirsecretsofstrongroomsandwells,thekeysofwhichwereinaveryfewsecretpocketsandaveryfewsecretbreasts;thesecretsofallthedispersedgrindersinthevastmill,amongwhomthereweredoubtlessplunderers,forgers,andtrust-betrayersofmanysorts,whomthelightofanydaythatdawnedmightreveal;hecouldhavefanciedthatthesethings,inhiding,impartedaheavinesstotheair.
