           Asmallcampfirewaslitforcookingandinthehopeofmaskingthestench.WhenGrenouillecameoutofthearcadesandmixedinwiththesepeople,theyatfirsttooknonoticeofhim.Hewasabletowalkuptothefireunchallenged,asifhewereoneofthem.Thatlaterhelpedconfirmtheviewthattheymusthavebeendealingwithaghostoranangelorsomeothersupernaturalbeing.Becausenormallytheywereverytouchyabouttheapproachofanystranger.Thelittlemaninthebluefrockcoat,however,hadsuddenlysimplybeenthere,asifhehadsproutedoutoftheground,andhehadhadalittlebottleinhishandthatheunstoppered.Thatwasthefirstthingthatanyofthemcouldrecall:thathehadstoodthereandunstopperedabottle.Andthenhehadsprinkledhimselfalloverwiththecontentsofthebottleandallatoncehehadbeenbathedinbeautylikeblazingfire.Foramomenttheyfellbackinaweandpureamazement.Butinthesameinstanttheysensedtheirfallingbackwasmorelikepreparingforarunningstart,thattheirawewasturningtodesire,theiramazementtorapture.Theyfeltthemselvesdrawntothisangelofaman.Afrenzied,alluringforcecamefromhim,ariptidenohumancouldhaveresisted,allthelessbecausenohumanwouldhavewantedtoresistit,forwhatthattidewaspullingunderanddraggingawaywasthehumanwillitself:straighttohim.Theyhadformedacirclearoundhim,twenty,thirtypeople,andtheircirclegrewsmallerandsmaller.Soonthecirclecouldnotcontainthemall,theybegantopush,toshove,andtoelbow,eachofthemtryingtobeclosesttothecenter.
