           Hehadgatheredtensofthousands,hundredsofthousandsofspecificsmellsandkeptthemsoclearly,so,randomly,athisdisposal,thathecouldnotonlyrecallthemwhenhesmelledthemagain,butcouldalsoactuallysmellthemsimplyuponrecollection.Andwhatwasmore,heevenknewhowbysheerimaginationtoarrangenewcombinationsofthem,tothepointwherehecreatedodorsthatdidnotexistintherealworld.Itwasasifhewereanautodidactpossessedofahugevocabularyofodorsthatenabledhimtoformatwillgreatnumbersofsmelledsentences—andatanagewhenotherchildrenstammerwords,sopainfullydrummedintothem,toformulatetheirfirstveryinadequatesentencesdescribingtheworld.Perhapstheclosestanalogytohistalentisthemusicalwunderkind,whohasheardhiswayinsidemelodiesandharmoniestothealphabetofindividualtonesandnowcomposescompletelynewmelodiesandharmoniesallonhisown.Withtheonedifference,however,thatthealphabetofodorsisincomparablylargerandmorenuancedthanthatoftones;andwiththeadditionaldifferencethatthecreativeactivityofGrenouillethewunderkindtookplaceonlyinsidehimandcouldbeperceivedbynooneotherthanhimself.Totheworldheappearedtogrowevermoresecretive.WhathelovedmostwastorovealonethroughthenorthernpartsoftheFaubourgSaint-Antoine,throughvegetablegardensandvineyards,acrossmeadows.Sometimeshedidnotcomehomeintheevening,remainedmissingfordays.Therodofpunishmentawaitinghimheborewithoutawhimperofpain.
