           ‘No,papa,’saidFanny,‘youmayrelyuponthat,Ithink.MybestlovetodearestAmy,andIwillwritetoherverysoon.’

           ‘ShallIconveyanymessageto—ha—anybodyelse?’askedMrDorrit,inaninsinuatingmanner.

           ‘Papa,’saidFanny,beforewhomMrsGeneralinstantlyloomed,‘no,Ithankyou.Youareverykind,Pa,butImustbegtobeexcused.Thereisnoothermessagetosend,Ithankyou,dearpapa,thatitwouldbeatallagreeabletoyoutotake.’

           Theypartedinanouterdrawing-room,whereonlyMrSparklerwaitedonhislady,anddutifullybidedhistimeforshakinghands.WhenMrSparklerwasadmittedtothisclosingaudience,MrMerdlecamecreepinginwithnotmuchmoreappearanceofarmsinhissleevesthanifhehadbeenthetwinbrotherofMissBiffin,andinsistedonescortingMrDorritdown-stairs.AllMrDorrit’sprotestationsbeinginvain,heenjoyedthehonourofbeingaccompaniedtothehall-doorbythisdistinguishedman,who(asMrDorrittoldhiminshakinghandsonthestep)hadreallyoverwhelmedhimwithattentionsandservicesduringthismemorablevisit.
