Whythisperversity,ifitwerenotinagenerousfit?—whichitwasnot.WhyshouldGowan,verymuchthesuperiorofBlandoisofParis,andverywellabletopullthatprepossessinggentlemantopiecesandfindoutthestuffhewasmadeof,takeupwithsuchaman?Inthefirstplace,heopposedthefirstseparatewishheobservedinhiswife,becauseherfatherhadpaidhisdebtsanditwasdesirabletotakeanearlyopportunityofassertinghisindependence.Inthesecondplace,heopposedtheprevalentfeeling,becausewithmanycapacitiesofbeingotherwise,hewasanill-conditionedman.HefoundapleasureindeclaringthatacourtierwiththerefinedmannersofBlandoisoughttorisetothegreatestdistinctioninanypolishedcountry.HefoundapleasureinsettingupBlandoisasthetypeofelegance,andmakinghimasatireuponotherswhopiquedthemselvesonpersonalgraces.
