           ‘Anddon’tyoustirfromhere,orspeakifshecalls,whileIrunroundthecorner.’

           ‘Madam,Iamastatue.’

           Afferyhadsovividafearofhisgoingstealthilyup-stairsthemomentherbackwasturned,thatafterhurryingoutofsight,shereturnedtothegatewaytopeepathim.Seeinghimstillonthethreshold,moreoutofthehousethaninit,asifhehadnolovefordarknessandnodesiretoprobeitsmysteries,sheflewintothenextstreet,andsentamessageintothetaverntoMrFlintwinch,whocameoutdirectly.Thetworeturningtogether—theladyinadvance,andMrFlintwinchcomingupbrisklybehind,animatedwiththehopeofshakingherbeforeshecouldgethoused—sawthegentlemanstandinginthesameplaceinthedark,andheardthestrongvoiceofMrsClennamcallingfromherroom,‘Whoisit?Whatisit?Whydoesnooneanswer?Whoisthat,downthere?’
