           Asoftenashebegantoconsiderhowtoincreasethisinheritance,ortolayitby,sooftenhismisgivingthattherewassomeonewithanunsatisfiedclaimuponhisjustice,returned;andthatalonewasasubjecttooutlastthelongestwalk.Again,therewasthesubjectofhisrelationswithhismother,whichwerenowuponanequableandpeacefulbutneverconfidentialfooting,andwhomhesawseveraltimesaweek.LittleDorritwasaleadingandaconstantsubject:forthecircumstancesofhislife,unitedtothoseofherownstory,presentedthelittlecreaturetohimastheonlypersonbetweenwhomandhimselfthereweretiesofinnocentrelianceononehand,andaffectionateprotectionontheother;tiesofcompassion,respect,unselfishinterest,gratitude,andpity.Thinkingofher,andofthepossibilityofherfather’sreleasefromprisonbytheunbarringhandofdeath—theonlychangeofcircumstancehecouldforeseethatmightenablehimtobesuchafriendtoherashewishedtobe,byalteringherwholemanneroflife,smoothingherroughroad,andgivingherahome—heregardedher,inthatperspective,ashisadopteddaughter,hispoorchildoftheMarshalseahushedtorest.Iftherewerealastsubjectinhisthoughts,anditlaytowardsTwickenham,itsformwassoindefinitethatitwaslittlemorethanthepervadingatmosphereinwhichtheseothersubjectsfloatedbeforehim.
