           HerewaspoorMrSparkler,notknowinghowtokeepthepeacebetweenthem,buthumblyincliningtotheopinionthattheycoulddonobetterthanagreethattheywerebothremarkablyfinewomen,andthattherewasnononsenseabouteitherofthem—forwhichgentlerecommendationtheyunitedinfallinguponhimfrightfully.Then,too,herewasMrsGeneral,gothomefromforeignparts,sendingaPruneandaPrismbyposteveryotherday,demandinganewTestimonialbywayofrecommendationtosomevacantappointmentorother.Ofwhichremarkablegentlewomanitmaybefinallyobserved,thattheresurelyneverwasagentlewomanofwhosetranscendentfitnessforanyvacantappointmentonthefaceofthisearth,somanypeoplewere(asthewarmthofherTestimonialsevinced)soperfectlysatisfied—orwhowassoveryunfortunateinhavingalargecircleofardentanddistinguishedadmirers,whoneverthemselveshappenedtowantherinanycapacity.

           OnthefirstcrashoftheeminentMrMerdle’sdecease,manyimportantpersonshadbeenunabletodeterminewhethertheyshouldcutMrsMerdle,orcomforther.Asitseemed,however,essentialtothestrengthoftheirowncasethattheyshouldadmithertohavebeencruellydeceived,theygraciouslymadetheadmission,andcontinuedtoknowher.ItfollowedthatMrsMerdle,asawomanoffashionandgoodbreedingwhohadbeensacrificedtothewilesofavulgarbarbarian(forMrMerdlewasfoundoutfromthecrownofhisheadtothesoleofhisfoot,themomenthewasfoundoutinhispocket),mustbeactivelychampionedbyherorderforherorder’ssake.
