           WiththefuneralclangthatitsoundedintoArthur’sheart,hissenseofweaknessreturned.Itwasatoilsomejourneyup-stairstohisroom,andhere-entereditsdarksolitaryprecinctsinunutterablemisery.

           Whenitwasalmostmidnight,andtheprisonhadlongbeenquiet,acautiouscreakcameupthestairs,andacautioustapofakeywasgivenathisdoor.ItwasYoungJohn.Heglidedin,inhisstockings,andheldthedoorclosed,whilehespokeinawhisper.

           ‘It’sagainstallrules,butIdon’tmind.Iwasdeterminedtocomethrough,andcometoyou.’

           ‘Whatisthematter?’

           ‘Nothing’sthematter,sir.Iwaswaitinginthecourt-yardforMissDorritwhenshecameout.Ithoughtyou’dlikesomeonetoseethatshewassafe.’

           ‘Thankyou,thankyou!Youtookherhome,John?’

           ‘Isawhertoherhotel.ThesamethatMrDorritwasat.MissDorritwalkedalltheway,andtalkedtomesokind,itquiteknockedmeover.Whydoyouthinkshewalkedinsteadofriding?’

           ‘Idon’tknow,John.’
