           ‘Onlittleoctagontablescandlesburnedinglassglobes;clumpsofstiff-leavedplantsseparatedsetsofcosywickerchairs;andbetweenthepairsofcolumns,whosereddishshaftscaughtinalongrowthesheenfromthetallwindows,thenight,glitteringandsombre,seemedtohanglikeasplendiddrapery.Theridinglightsofshipswinkedafarlikesettingstars,andthehillsacrosstheroadsteadresembledroundedblackmassesofarrestedthunder-clouds.

           ‘“Icouldn’tclearout,”Jimbegan.“Theskipperdidthat’sallverywellforhim.Icouldn’t,andIwouldn’t.Theyallgotoutofitinonewayoranother,butitwouldn’tdoforme.”
