           Amarvellousstillnesspervadedtheworld,andthestars,togetherwiththeserenityoftheirrays,seemedtoshedupontheearththeassuranceofeverlastingsecurity.Theyoungmoonrecurved,andshininglowinthewest,waslikeaslendershavingthrownupfromabarofgold,andtheArabianSea,smoothandcooltotheeyelikeasheetofice,extendeditsperfectleveltotheperfectcircleofadarkhorizon.Thepropellerturnedwithoutacheck,asthoughitsbeathadbeenpartoftheschemeofasafeuniverse;andoneachsideofthePatnatwodeepfoldsofwater,permanentandsombreontheunwrinkledshimmer,enclosedwithintheirstraightanddivergingridgesafewwhiteswirlsoffoamburstinginalowhiss,afewwavelets,afewripples,afewundulationsthat,leftbehind,agitatedthesurfaceoftheseaforaninstantafterthepassageoftheship,subsidedsplashinggently,calmeddownatlastintothecircularstillnessofwaterandskywiththeblackspeckofthemovinghullremainingeverlastinglyinitscentre.

           Jimonthebridgewaspenetratedbythegreatcertitudeofunboundedsafetyandpeacethatcouldbereadonthesilentaspectofnaturelikethecertitudeoffosteringloveupontheplacidtendernessofamother’sface.
