           ‘Isleptlittle,hurriedovermybreakfast,andafteraslighthesitationgaveupmyearlymorningvisittomyship.Itwasreallyverywrongofme,because,thoughmychiefmatewasanexcellentmanallround,hewasthevictimofsuchblackimaginingsthatifhedidnotgetaletterfromhiswifeattheexpectedtimehewouldgoquitedistractedwithrageandjealousy,loseallgriponthework,quarrelwithallhands,andeitherweepinhiscabinordevelopsuchaferocityoftemperasallbutdrovethecrewtothevergeofmutiny.Thethinghadalwaysseemedinexplicabletome:theyhadbeenmarriedthirteenyears;Ihadaglimpseofheronce,and,honestly,Icouldn’tconceiveamanabandonedenoughtoplungeintosinforthesakeofsuchanunattractiveperson.Idon’tknowwhetherIhavenotdonewrongbyrefrainingfromputtingthatviewbeforepoorSelvin:themanmadealittlehellonearthforhimself,andIalsosufferedindirectly,butsomesortof,nodoubt,falsedelicacypreventedme.Themaritalrelationsofseamenwouldmakeaninterestingsubject,andIcouldtellyouinstances....However,thisisnottheplace,northetime,andweareconcernedwithJimwhowasunmarried.Ifhisimaginativeconscienceorhispride;ifalltheextravagantghostsandaustereshadesthatwerethedisastrousfamiliarsofhisyouthwouldnotlethimrunawayfromtheblock,I,whoofcoursecan’tbesuspectedofsuchfamiliars,wasirresistiblyimpelledtogoandseehisheadrolloff.Iwendedmywaytowardsthecourt.
