           Itwouldbemuchthesamethisday,andGrenouille’smother,whowasstillayoungwoman,barelyinhermid-twenties,andwhostillwasquiteprettyandhadalmostallherteethinhermouthandsomehaironherheadand-exceptforgoutandsyphilisandatouchofconsumption-sufferedfromnoseriousdisease,whostillhopedtoliveawhileyet,perhapsagoodfiveortenyears,andperhapseventomarryonedayandasthehonorablewifeofawidowerwithatradeorsomesuchtobearrealchildren…Grenouille’smotherwishedthatitwerealreadyover.Andwhenthefinalcontractionsbegan,shesquatteddownundertheguttingtableandtheregavebirth,asshehaddonefourtimesbefore,andcutthenewbornthing’sumbilicalcordwithherbutcherknife.Butthen,onaccountoftheheatandthestench,whichshedidnotperceiveassuchbutonlyasanunbearable,numbingsomething-likeafieldofliliesorasmallroomfilledwithtoomanydaffodils-shegrewfaint,toppledtooneside,felloutfromunderthetableintothestreet,andlaythere,knifeinhand.Tumultandturmoil.Thecrowdstandsinacirclearoundher,staring,someonehailsthepolice.Thewomanwiththeknifeinherhandisstilllyinginthestreet.Slowlyshecomesto.Whathashappenedtoher?“Nothing.”Whatisshedoingwiththatknife?“Nothing.”Wheredoesthebloodonherskirtcomefrom?“Fromthefish.”Shestandsup,tossestheknifeaside,andwalksofftowash.Andthen,unexpectedly,theinfantundertheguttingtablebeginstosquall.
