           Whichistosay,forwellovertwentyhoursadayintotaldarknessandintotalsilenceandintotalimmobility,hesatonhishorseblanketattheendofthestonycorridor,hisbackrestingontherockslide,hisshoulderswedgedbetweentherocks,andenjoyedhimself.Wearefamiliarwithpeoplewhoseekoutsolitude:penitents,failures,saints,orprophets.Theyretreattodeserts,preferably,wheretheyliveonlocustsandhoney.Others,however,liveincavesorcellsonremoteislands;some-morespectacularly-squatincagesmountedhighatoppolesswayinginthebreeze.TheydothistobenearertoGod.Theirsolitudeisaself-mortificationbywhichtheydopenance.TheyactinthebeliefthattheyarelivingalifepleasingtoGod.Ortheywaitmonths,years,fortheirsolitudetobebrokenbysomedivinemessagethattheyhopethenspeedilytobroadcastamongmankind.Grenouille’scasewasnothingofthesort.TherewasnottheleastnotionofGodinhishead.Hewasnotdoingpenancenorwaitingforsomesupernaturalinspiration.Hehadwithdrawnsolelyforhisownpersonalpleasure,onlytobeneartohimself.Nolongerdistractedbyanythingexternal,hebaskedinhisownexistenceandfounditsplendid.Helayinhisstonycryptlikehisowncorpse,hardlybreathing,hishearthardlybeating-andyetlivedasintensivelyanddissolutelyaseverarakehadlivedinthewideworldoutside.
