Meanwhile,IwasbusytryingtowriteanotherseriesandwasalsowritingandscripteditingtheTVseries"Dr.Who,"becausewhileitwasallverypleasanttohaveyourownradioseries,especiallyonethatsomebodyhadwrittenintosaytheyhadheard,itdidn’texactlybuyyoulunch.
SothatwasmoreorlessthesituationwhenthebookTheHitchhiker’sGuidetotheGalaxywaspublishedinEnglandinSeptember1979andappearedontheSundayTimesmassmarketbest-sellerlistatnumberoneandjuststayedthere.Clearly,somebodyhadbeenlistening.
Thisiswherethingsstartgettingcomplicated,andthisiswhatIwasasked,inwritingthisIntroduction,toexplain.TheGuidehasappearedinsomanyforms—books,radio,atelevisionseries,recordsandsoontobeamajormotionpicture—eachtimewithadifferentstorylinethatevenitsmostacutefollowershavebecomebaffledattimes.
Herethenisabreakdownofthedifferentversions—notincludingthevariousstageversions,whichhaven’tbeenseenintheStatesandonlycomplicatethematterfurther.
TheradioseriesbeganinEnglandinMarch1978.Thefirstseriesconsistedofsixprograms,or"fits"astheywerecalled.Fits1thru6.Easy.Laterthatyear,onemoreepisodewasrecordedandbroadcast,commonlyknownastheChristmasepisode.
