Mightystarshipspliedtheirwaybetweenexoticsuns,seekingadventureandrewardamongstthefurthestreachesofGalacticspace.Inthosedaysspiritswerebrave,thestakeswerehigh,menwererealmen,womenwererealwomen,andsmallfurrycreaturesfromAlphaCentauriwererealsmallfurrycreaturesfromAlphaCentauri.Andalldaredtobraveunknownterrors,todomightydeeds,toboldlysplitinfinitivesthatnomanhadsplitbefore—andthuswastheEmpireforged.
Manymenofcoursebecameextremelyrich,butthiswasperfectlynaturalandnothingtobeashamedofbecausenoonewasreallypoor—atleastnooneworthspeakingof.Andforalltherichestandmostsuccessfulmerchantslifeinevitablybecameratherdullandniggly,andtheybegantoimaginethatthiswasthereforethefaultoftheworldsthey’dsettledon—noneofthemwasentirelysatisfactory:eithertheclimatewasn’tquiterightinthelaterpartoftheafternoon,orthedaywashalfanhourtoolong,ortheseawasexactlythewrongshadeofpink.
