           Silentlytheaircarcoastedthroughthecolddarkness,asinglesoftglowoflightthatwasutterlyaloneinthedeepMagratheannight.Itspedswiftly.Arthur’scompanionseemedsunkinhisownthoughts,andwhenArthurtriedonacoupleofoccasionstoengagehiminconversationagainhewouldsimplyreplybyaskingifhewascomfortableenough,andthenleftitatthat.

           Arthurtriedtogaugethespeedatwhichtheyweretravelling,buttheblacknessoutsidewasabsoluteandhewasdeniedanyreferencepoints.Thesenseofmotionwassosoftandslighthecouldalmostbelievetheywerehardlymovingatall.

           ThenatinyglowoflightappearedinthefardistanceandwithinsecondshadgrownsomuchinsizethatArthurrealizeditwastravellingtowardsthematacolossalspeed,andhetriedtomakeoutwhatsortofcraftitmightbe.Hepeeredatit,butwasunabletodiscernanyclearshape,andsuddenlygaspedinalarmastheaircraftdippedsharplyandheadeddownwardsinwhatseemedcertaintobeacollisioncourse.Theirrelativevelocityseemedunbelievable,andArthurhadhardlytimetodrawbreathbeforeitwasallover.Thenextthinghewasawareofwasaninsanesilverblurthatseemedtosurroundhim.Hetwistedhisheadsharplyroundandsawasmallblackpointdwindlingrapidlyinthedistancebehindthem,andittookhimseveralsecondstorealizewhathadhappened.

           Theyhadplungedintoatunnelintheground.Thecolossalspeedhadbeentheirownrelativetotheglowoflightwhichwasastationaryholeintheground,themouthofthetunnel.
