           Itisanimportantandpopularfactthatthingsarenotalwayswhattheyseem.Forinstance,ontheplanetEarth,manhadalwaysassumedthathewasmoreintelligentthandolphinsbecausehehadachievedsomuch—thewheel,NewYork,warsandsoon—whilstallthedolphinshadeverdonewasmuckaboutinthewaterhavingagoodtime.Butconversely,thedolphinshadalwaysbelievedthattheywerefarmoreintelligentthanman—forpreciselythesamereasons.

           Curiouslyenough,thedolphinshadlongknownoftheimpendingdestructionoftheplanetEarthandhadmademanyattemptstoalertmankindofthedanger;butmostoftheircommunicationsweremisinterpretedasamusingattemptstopunchfootballsorwhistlefortidbits,sotheyeventuallygaveupandlefttheEarthbytheirownmeansshortlybeforetheVogonsarrived.

           Thelasteverdolphinmessagewasmisinterpretedasasurprisinglysophisticatedattempttodoadouble-backwards-somersaultthroughahoopwhilstwhistlingthe"StarSprangledBanner",butinfactthemessagewasthis:Solongandthanksforallthefish.

           Infacttherewasonlyonespeciesontheplanetmoreintelligentthandolphins,andtheyspentalotoftheirtimeinbehaviouralresearchlaboratoriesrunningroundinsidewheelsandconductingfrighteninglyelegantandsubtleexperimentsonman.Thefactthatonceagainmancompletelymisinterpretedthisrelationshipwasentirelyaccordingtothesecreatures’plans.
