ThehistoryofTheHitchhiker’sGuidetotheGalaxyisnowsocomplicatedthateverytimeItellitIcontradictmyself,andwheneverIdogetitrightI’mmisquoted.Sothepublicationofthisomnibuseditionseemedlikeagoodopportunitytosettherecordstraight—oratleastfirmlycrooked.Anythingthatisputdownwronghereis,asfarasI’mconcerned,wrongforgood.
TheideaforthetitlefirstcroppedupwhileIwaslyingdrunkinafieldinInnsbruck,Austria,in1971.Notparticularlydrunk,justthesortofdrunkyougetwhenyouhaveacoupleofstiffGössersafternothavingeatenfortwodaysstraight,onaccountofbeingapennilesshitchhiker.Wearetalkingofamildinabilitytostandup.
IwastravelingwithacopyoftheHitchHiker’sGuidetoEuropebyKenWalsh,averybatteredcopythatIhadborrowedfromsomeone.Infact,sincethiswas1971andIstillhavethebook,itmustcountasstolenbynow.Ididn’thaveacopyofEuropeonFiveDollarsaDay(asitthenwas)becauseIwasn’tinthatfinancialleague.
Nightwasbeginningtofallonmyfieldasitspunlazilyunderneathme.IwaswonderingwhereIcouldgothatwascheaperthanInnsbruck,revolvedlessanddidn’tdothesortofthingstomethatInnsbruckhaddonetomethatafternoon.Whathadhappenedwasthis.Ihadbeenwalkingthroughthetowntryingtofindaparticularaddress,andbeingthoroughlylostIstoppedtoaskfordirectionsfromamaninthestreet.
