IdecidedtocallhimFordPrefect.(ThiswasajokethatmissedAmericanaudiencesentirely,ofcourse,sincetheyhadneverheardoftheratheroddlynamedlittlecar,andmanythoughtitwasatypingerrorforPerfect.)Iexplainedinthetextthattheminimalresearchmyaliencharacterhaddonebeforearrivingonthisplanethadledhimtothinkthatthisnamewouldbe"nicelyinconspicuous."Hehadsimplymistakenthedominantlifeform.
Sohowwouldsuchamistakearise?IrememberedwhenIusedtohitchhikethroughEuropeandwouldoftenfindthattheinformationoradvicethatcamemywaywasoutofdateormisleadinginsomeway.Mostofit,ofcourse,justcamefromstoriesofotherpeople’stravelexperiences.
AtthatpointthetitleTheHitchhiker’sGuidetotheGalaxysuddenlypoppedbackintomymindfromwhereverithadbeenhidingallthistime.Ford,Idecided,wouldbearesearcherwhocollecteddatafortheGuide.AssoonasIstartedtodevelopthisparticularnotion,itmovedinexorablytothecenterofthestory,andtherest,asthecreatoroftheoriginalFordPrefectwouldsay,isbunk.
Thestorygrewinthemostconvolutedway,asmanypeoplewillbesurprisedtolearn.
