IwenttoCambridgeUniversity.Itookanumberofbaths—andadegreeinEnglish.Iworriedalotaboutgirlsandwhathadhappenedtomybike.LaterIbecameawriterandworkedonalotofthingsthatwerealmostincrediblysuccessfulbutinfactjustfailedtoseethelightofday.OtherwriterswillknowwhatImean.
Mypetprojectwastowritesomethingthatwouldcombinecomedyandsciencefiction,anditwasthisobsessionthatdrovemeintodeepdebtanddespair.Noonewasinterested,exceptfinallyonemanaBBCradioproducernamedSimonBrettwhohadhadthesameidea,comedyandsciencefiction.AlthoughSimononlyproducedthefirstepisodebeforeleavingtheBBCtoconcentrateonhisownwriting(heisbestknownintheUnitedStaresforhisexcellentCharlesParisdetectivenovels),Iowehimanimmensedebtofgratitudeforsimplygettingthethingtohappeninthefirstplace.HewassucceededbythelegendaryGeoffreyPerkins.
Initsoriginalformtheshowwasgoingtoberatherdifferent.Iwasfeelingalittledisgruntledwiththeworldatthetimeandhadputtogetheraboutsixdifferentplots,eachofwhichendedwiththedestructionoftheworldinadifferentway,andforadifferentreason.Itwastobecalled“TheEndsoftheEarth”.
