           Mrs.JohnDashwoodhadsomuchconfidenceinherhusband’sjudgment,thatshewaitedtheverynextdaybothonMrs.Jenningsandherdaughter;andherconfidencewasrewardedbyfindingeventheformer,eventhewomanwithwhomhersisterswerestaying,bynomeansunworthyhernotice;andasforLadyMiddleton,shefoundheroneofthemostcharmingwomenintheworld!

           LadyMiddletonwasequallypleasedwithMrs.Dashwood.Therewasakindofcoldheartedselfishnessonbothsides,whichmutuallyattractedthem;andtheysympathisedwitheachotherinaninsipidproprietyofdemeanor,andageneralwantofunderstanding.

           Thesamemanners,however,whichrecommendedMrs.JohnDashwoodtothegoodopinionofLadyMiddletondidnotsuitthefancyofMrs.Jennings,andtoHERsheappearednothingmorethanalittleproud-lookingwomanofuncordialaddress,whometherhusband’ssisterswithoutanyaffection,andalmostwithouthavinganythingtosaytothem;forofthequarterofanhourbestowedonBerkeleyStreet,shesatatleastsevenminutesandahalfinsilence.

           Elinorwantedverymuchtoknow,thoughshedidnotchusetoask,whetherEdwardwasthenintown;butnothingwouldhaveinducedFannyvoluntarilytomentionhisnamebeforeher,tillabletotellherthathismarriagewithMissMortonwasresolvedon,ortillherhusband’sexpectationsonColonelBrandonwereanswered;becauseshebelievedthemstillsoverymuchattachedtoeachother,thattheycouldnotbetoosedulouslydividedinwordanddeedoneveryoccasion.Theintelligencehowever,whichSHEwouldnotgive,soonflowedfromanotherquarter.
