           WhentheparticularsofthisconversationwererepeatedbyMissDashwoodtohersister,astheyverysoonwere,theeffectonherwasnotentirelysuchastheformerhadhopedtosee.NotthatMarianneappearedtodistrustthetruthofanypartofit,forshelistenedtoitallwiththemoststeadyandsubmissiveattention,madeneitherobjectionnorremark,attemptednovindicationofWilloughby,andseemedtoshewbyhertearsthatshefeltittobeimpossible.ButthoughthisbehaviourassuredElinorthattheconvictionofthisguiltWAScarriedhometohermind,thoughshesawwithsatisfactiontheeffectofit,inhernolongeravoidingColonelBrandonwhenhecalled,inherspeakingtohim,evenvoluntarilyspeaking,withakindofcompassionaterespect,andthoughshesawherspiritslessviolentlyirritatedthanbefore,shedidnotseeherlesswretched.Herminddidbecomesettled,butitwassettledinagloomydejection.ShefeltthelossofWilloughby’scharacteryetmoreheavilythanshehadfeltthelossofhisheart;hisseductionanddesertionofMissWilliams,themiseryofthatpoorgirl,andthedoubtofwhathisdesignsmightONCEhavebeenonherself,preyedaltogethersomuchonherspirits,thatshecouldnotbringherselftospeakofwhatshefelteventoElinor;and,broodingoverhersorrowsinsilence,gavemorepaintohersisterthancouldhavebeencommunicatedbythemostopenandmostfrequentconfessionofthem.
