           Nosoonerwasheranswerdispatched,thanMrs.Dashwoodindulgedherselfinthepleasureofannouncingtoherson-in-lawandhiswifethatshewasprovidedwithahouse,andshouldincommodethemnolongerthantilleverythingwerereadyforherinhabitingit.Theyheardherwithsurprise.Mrs.JohnDashwoodsaidnothing;butherhusbandcivillyhopedthatshewouldnotbesettledfarfromNorland.ShehadgreatsatisfactioninreplyingthatshewasgoingintoDevonshire.—Edwardturnedhastilytowardsher,onhearingthis,and,inavoiceofsurpriseandconcern,whichrequirednoexplanationtoher,repeated,"Devonshire!Areyou,indeed,goingthere?Sofarfromhence!Andtowhatpartofit?"Sheexplainedthesituation.ItwaswithinfourmilesnorthwardofExeter.

           "Itisbutacottage,"shecontinued,"butIhopetoseemanyofmyfriendsinit.Aroomortwocaneasilybeadded;andifmyfriendsfindnodifficultyintravellingsofartoseeme,IamsureIwillfindnoneinaccommodatingthem."

           SheconcludedwithaverykindinvitationtoMr.andMrs.JohnDashwoodtovisitheratBarton;andtoEdwardshegaveonewithstillgreateraffection.Thoughherlateconversationwithherdaughter-in-lawhadmadeherresolveonremainingatNorlandnolongerthanwasunavoidable,ithadnotproducedthesmallesteffectonherinthatpointtowhichitprincipallytended.ToseparateEdwardandElinorwasasfarfrombeingherobjectasever;andshewishedtoshowMrs.JohnDashwood,bythispointedinvitationtoherbrother,howtotallyshedisregardedherdisapprobationofthematch.
