           Mrs.Dashwooddidnothearunmovedthevindicationofherformerfavourite.Sherejoicedinhisbeingclearedfromsomepartofhisimputedguilt;—shewassorryforhim;—shewishedhimhappy.Butthefeelingsofthepastcouldnotberecalled.—Nothingcouldrestorehimwithafaithunbroken—acharacterunblemished,toMarianne.Nothingcoulddoawaytheknowledgeofwhatthelatterhadsufferedthroughhismeans,norremovetheguiltofhisconducttowardsEliza.Nothingcouldreplacehim,therefore,inherformeresteem,norinjuretheinterestsofColonelBrandon.
