           Mrs.Dashwoodwassurprisedonlyforamomentatseeinghim;forhiscomingtoBartonwas,inheropinion,ofallthingsthemostnatural.Herjoyandexpressionofregardlongoutlivedherwonder.Hereceivedthekindestwelcomefromher;andshyness,coldness,reservecouldnotstandagainstsuchareception.Theyhadbeguntofailhimbeforeheenteredthehouse,andtheywerequiteovercomebythecaptivatingmannersofMrs.Dashwood.Indeedamancouldnotverywellbeinlovewitheitherofherdaughters,withoutextendingthepassiontoher;andElinorhadthesatisfactionofseeinghimsoonbecomemorelikehimself.Hisaffectionsseemedtoreanimatetowardsthemall,andhisinterestintheirwelfareagainbecameperceptible.Hewasnotinspirits,however;hepraisedtheirhouse,admireditsprospect,wasattentive,andkind;butstillhewasnotinspirits.Thewholefamilyperceivedit,andMrs.Dashwood,attributingittosomewantofliberalityinhismother,satdowntotableindignantagainstallselfishparents.
