           ThoughMrs.Jenningswasinthehabitofspendingalargeportionoftheyearatthehousesofherchildrenandfriends,shewasnotwithoutasettledhabitationofherown.Sincethedeathofherhusband,whohadtradedwithsuccessinalesselegantpartofthetown,shehadresidedeverywinterinahouseinoneofthestreetsnearPortmanSquare.Towardsthishome,shebeganontheapproachofJanuarytoturnherthoughts,andthithersheonedayabruptly,andveryunexpectedlybythem,askedtheelderMissesDashwoodtoaccompanyher.Elinor,withoutobservingthevaryingcomplexionofhersister,andtheanimatedlookwhichspokenoindifferencetotheplan,immediatelygaveagratefulbutabsolutedenialforboth,inwhichshebelievedherselftobespeakingtheirunitedinclinations.Thereasonallegedwastheirdeterminedresolutionofnotleavingtheirmotheratthattimeoftheyear.Mrs.Jenningsreceivedtherefusalwithsomesurprise,andrepeatedherinvitationimmediately.
