           Mariannegotupthenextmorningatherusualtime;toeveryinquiryrepliedthatshewasbetter,andtriedtoproveherselfso,byengaginginheraccustomaryemployments.Butadayspentinsittingshiveringoverthefirewithabookinherhand,whichshewasunabletoread,orinlying,wearyandlanguid,onasofa,didnotspeakmuchinfavourofheramendment;andwhen,atlast,shewentearlytobed,moreandmoreindisposed,ColonelBrandonwasonlyastonishedathersister’scomposure,who,thoughattendingandnursingherthewholeday,againstMarianne’sinclination,andforcingpropermedicinesonheratnight,trusted,likeMarianne,tothecertaintyandefficacyofsleep,andfeltnorealalarm.

           Averyrestlessandfeverishnight,however,disappointedtheexpectationofboth;andwhenMarianne,afterpersistinginrising,confessedherselfunabletositup,andreturnedvoluntarilytoherbed,ElinorwasveryreadytoadoptMrs.Jennings’sadvice,ofsendingforthePalmers’apothecary.

           Hecame,examinedhispatient,andthoughencouragingMissDashwoodtoexpectthataveryfewdayswouldrestorehersistertohealth,yet,bypronouncingherdisordertohaveaputridtendency,andallowingtheword"infection"topasshislips,gaveinstantalarmtoMrs.Palmer,onherbaby’saccount.Mrs.Jennings,whohadbeeninclinedfromthefirsttothinkMarianne’scomplaintmoreseriousthanElinor,nowlookedverygraveonMr.Harris’sreport,andconfirmingCharlotte’sfearsandcaution,urgedthenecessityofherimmediateremovalwithherinfant;andMr.
