           Nothingoccurredduringthenextthreeorfourdays,tomakeElinorregretwhatshehaddone,inapplyingtohermother;forWilloughbyneithercamenorwrote.TheywereengagedabouttheendofthattimetoattendLadyMiddletontoaparty,fromwhichMrs.Jenningswaskeptawaybytheindispositionofheryoungestdaughter;andforthisparty,Marianne,whollydispirited,carelessofherappearance,andseemingequallyindifferentwhethershewentorstaid,prepared,withoutonelookofhopeoroneexpressionofpleasure.Shesatbythedrawing-roomfireaftertea,tillthemomentofLadyMiddleton’sarrival,withoutoncestirringfromherseat,oralteringherattitude,lostinherownthoughts,andinsensibleofhersister’spresence;andwhenatlasttheyweretoldthatLadyMiddletonwaitedforthematthedoor,shestartedasifshehadforgottenthatanyonewasexpected.

           Theyarrivedinduetimeattheplaceofdestination,andassoonasthestringofcarriagesbeforethemwouldallow,alighted,ascendedthestairs,heardtheirnamesannouncedfromonelanding-placetoanotherinanaudiblevoice,andenteredaroomsplendidlylitup,quitefullofcompany,andinsufferablyhot.Whentheyhadpaidtheirtributeofpolitenessbycurtsyingtotheladyofthehouse,theywerepermittedtomingleinthecrowd,andtaketheirshareoftheheatandinconvenience,towhichtheirarrivalmustnecessarilyadd.
