           Elinor,startingbackwithalookofhorroratthesightofhim,obeyedthefirstimpulseofherheartinturninginstantlytoquittheroom,andherhandwasalreadyonthelock,whenitsactionwassuspendedbyhishastilyadvancing,andsaying,inavoiceratherofcommandthansupplication,

           "MissDashwood,forhalfanhour—fortenminutes—Ientreatyoutostay."

           "No,sir,"sherepliedwithfirmness,"IshallNOTstay.YourbusinesscannotbewithME.Theservants,Isuppose,forgottotellyouthatMr.Palmerwasnotinthehouse."

           "Hadtheytoldme,"hecriedwithvehemence,"thatMr.Palmerandallhisrelationswereatthedevil,itwouldnothaveturnedmefromthedoor.Mybusinessiswithyou,andonlyyou."

           "Withme!"—intheutmostamazement—"well,sir,—bequick—andifyoucan—lessviolent."

           "Sitdown,andIwillbeboth."

           Shehesitated;sheknewnotwhattodo.ThepossibilityofColonelBrandon’sarrivingandfindingherthere,cameacrossher.Butshehadpromisedtohearhim,andhercuriositynolessthanherhonorwasengaged.Afteramoment’srecollection,therefore,concludingthatprudencerequireddispatch,andthatheracquiescencewouldbestpromoteit,shewalkedsilentlytowardsthetable,andsatdown.Hetooktheoppositechair,andforhalfaminutenotawordwassaidbyeither.
