           Mrs.Dashwood’svisittoLadyMiddletontookplacethenextday,andtwoofherdaughterswentwithher;butMarianneexcusedherselffrombeingoftheparty,undersometriflingpretextofemployment;andhermother,whoconcludedthatapromisehadbeenmadebyWilloughbythenightbeforeofcallingonherwhiletheywereabsent,wasperfectlysatisfiedwithherremainingathome.

           OntheirreturnfromtheparktheyfoundWilloughby’scurricleandservantinwaitingatthecottage,andMrs.Dashwoodwasconvincedthatherconjecturehadbeenjust.Sofaritwasallasshehadforeseen;butonenteringthehouseshebeheldwhatnoforesighthadtaughthertoexpect.TheywerenosoonerinthepassagethanMariannecamehastilyoutoftheparlourapparentlyinviolentaffliction,withherhandkerchiefathereyes;andwithoutnoticingthemranupstairs.Surprisedandalarmedtheyproceededdirectlyintotheroomshehadjustquitted,wheretheyfoundonlyWilloughby,whowasleaningagainstthemantel-piecewithhisbacktowardsthem.Heturnedroundontheircomingin,andhiscountenanceshewedthathestronglypartookoftheemotionwhichover-poweredMarianne.

           "Isanythingthematterwithher?"criedMrs.Dashwoodassheentered—"issheill?"

           "Ihopenot,"hereplied,tryingtolookcheerful;andwithaforcedsmilepresentlyadded,"ItisIwhomayratherexpecttobeill—forIamnowsufferingunderaveryheavydisappointment!"
