           Aftersometimespentinsayinglittleordoingless,LadyMiddletonsatdowntoCassino,andasMariannewasnotinspiritsformovingabout,sheandElinorluckilysucceedingtochairs,placedthemselvesatnogreatdistancefromthetable.

           Theyhadnotremainedinthismannerlong,beforeElinorperceivedWilloughby,standingwithinafewyardsofthem,inearnestconversationwithaveryfashionablelookingyoungwoman.Shesooncaughthiseye,andheimmediatelybowed,butwithoutattemptingtospeaktoher,ortoapproachMarianne,thoughhecouldnotbutseeher;andthencontinuedhisdiscoursewiththesamelady.ElinorturnedinvoluntarilytoMarianne,toseewhetheritcouldbeunobservedbyher.Atthatmomentshefirstperceivedhim,andherwholecountenanceglowingwithsuddendelight,shewouldhavemovedtowardshiminstantly,hadnothersistercaughtholdofher.

           "Goodheavens!"sheexclaimed,"heisthere—heisthere—Oh!whydoeshenotlookatme?whycannotIspeaktohim?"

           "Pray,praybecomposed,"criedElinor,"anddonotbetraywhatyoufeeltoeverybodypresent.Perhapshehasnotobservedyouyet."

           Thishoweverwasmorethanshecouldbelieveherself;andtobecomposedatsuchamomentwasnotonlybeyondthereachofMarianne,itwasbeyondherwish.Shesatinanagonyofimpatiencewhichaffectedeveryfeature.

           Atlastheturnedroundagain,andregardedthemboth;shestartedup,andpronouncinghisnameinatoneofaffection,heldoutherhandtohim.
