RecentlyinSanFrancisco,wherethepresenceofhillsmadethemovementofcrowdedstreet-railwaycarsexceedinglydifficult,anewtypeoftractionhadbeenintroduced—thatofthecable,whichwasnothingmorethanatravelingropeofwirerunningovergutteredwheelsinaconduit,anddrivenbyimmenseengines,convenientlylocatedinadjacentstationsor"power-houses."Thecarscarriedareadilymanipulated"grip-lever,"orsteelhand,whichreacheddownthroughaslotintoaconduitand"gripped"themovingcable.Thisinventionsolvedtheproblemofhaulingheavilyladenstreet-carsupanddownsteepgrades.Aboutthesametimehealsoheard,inaroundaboutway,thattheChicagoCityRailway,ofwhichSchryhartandMerrillweretheprincipalowners,wasabouttointroducethismodeoftractiononitslines—tocableStateStreet,andattachthecarsofotherlinesrunningfartheroutintounprofitabledistrictsas"trailers."AtoncethesolutionoftheNorthandWestSideproblemsflasheduponhim—cables.
