OnAugust4,1896,thecityofChicago,andforthatmattertheentirefinancialworld,wasstartledandamazedbythecollapseofAmericanMatch,oneofthestrongestofmarketsecurities,andthecoincidentfailureofMessrs.HullandStackpole,itsostensiblepromoters,fortwentymillions.Asearlyaseleveno’clockoftheprecedingdaythebankingandbrokerageworldofChicago,tradinginthisstock,wasfullyawarethatsomethinguntowardwasonfootinconnectionwithit.Owingtothehighpriceatwhichthestockwas"protected,"andtheneedofmoneytoliquidate,blocksofthisstockfromallpartsofthecountrywerebeingrushedtothemarketwiththehopeofrealizingbeforetheultimatebreak.Aboutthestock-exchange,whichfrownedlikeagrayfortressatthefootofLaSalleStreet,allwasexcitement—asthoughagiantanthillhadbeenruthlesslydisturbed.Clerksandmessengershurriedtoandfroinconfusedandapparentlyaimlessdirections.BrokerswhosesupplyofAmericanMatchhadbeenapparentlyexhaustedonthepreviousdaynowappearedon‘changebrightandearly,andattheclangofthegongbegantoofferthestockinsizablelotsoffromtwohundredtofivehundredshares.TheagentsofHull&Stackpolewereinthemarket,ofcourse,inthefrontrankofthescrambling,yellingthrong,takingupwhateverstockappearedatthepricetheywerehopingtomaintain.
