           Cowperwoodwasenchanted.Hekepttheproposedtrystwitheagernessandfoundherallthathehadhoped.Shewassweeter,morecolorful,moreelusivethananybodyhehadeverknown.IntheircharmingapartmentontheNorthSidewhichheatonceengaged,andwherehesometimesspentmornings,evenings,afternoons,asopportunityafforded,hestudiedherwiththemostcriticaleyeandfoundheralmostflawless.Shehadthatboundlessvaluewhichyouthandacertaininsoucianceofmannercontribute.Therewas,delicioustorelate,nomelancholyinhernature,butakindofinnatesufficiencywhichneitherlookedforwardtonorbackupontroublesomeills.Shelovedbeautifulthings,butwasnotextravagant;andwhatinterestedhimandcommandedhisrespectwasthatnourgingsofhistowardprodigality,howeversubtlyadvanced,couldaffecther.Sheknewwhatshewanted,spentcarefully,boughttastefully,arrayedherselfinwayswhichappealedtohimastheflowersdid.Hisfeelingforherbecameattimessogreatthathewished,onemightalmosthavesaid,todestroyittoappeasetheurgeandallaythepullinhimself,butitwasuseless.Thecharmofherendured.Histransportswouldleaveherrefreshedapparently,prettier,moregracefulthanever,itseemedtohim,puttingbackherruffledhairwithherhand,mouthingatherselfprettilyintheglass,thinkingofmanyremotedeliciousthingsatonce.
